Tito's Testimony
“I was born and brought up in a very strict Islamic culture in Northern Nigeria.
I was chosen to be the next “Imam” of the community, and so was sent to Syria to
receive teaching from the Sheikhs. The more I studied, the more I disagreed with
the teaching, but I still ended up in another Islamic Institute sponsored by Iranian
Islamic revolutionaries. Although I was rescued by our ambassador from Northern
Nigeria, who is a Christian, and returned home, I had to face a tribunal of elders
and was sent again to study Islamic law, this time at Al-Azhar University in Cairo.
I was not happy there, so turned to alcohol. One day, on the way to a party, I passed
an open door in the building and saw a book lying open under a glass cover. It was
a Bible and as I read the words of 2 Corinthians 10:1-6, my heart was touched. I
went into the apartment and found myself in a Christian service. I sang hymns, heard
preaching and finally left clutching my own copy of the Bible, and a leaflet about
how to stop drinking alcohol. That night my life was changed as I read the Bible
and found the Savior I was longing for. The Holy Bible answered all my questions
that the Koran could not do.
"My newfound faith in Jesus Christ evoked the jealousy of my folks, who argued and
threatened but to no avail. They saw it as a huge blow, as they had expected me
to one day be the Imam (a position traditionally held by our family). I became a
serious threat to them as I began to influence others to follow Jesus also, and
they had to find a way to get rid of me. I was arrested and sentenced to life in
prison, there in Egypt. I was kept in a state of incommunicado and all kinds of
torture were inflicted on me, but the Lord was always there for me. After 3 years
I was sent to another prison block where it was a little more relaxed and I met
other persecuted brothers. We determined to make our prison block into our monastery,
Bible College, and mission field, despite the ban on all Christian activities. It
wasn’t long before the authorities learned our intentions and we were scattered.
I was sent to Kanater prison, and instead of us having ONE fellowship we now have
THREE in three different prisons! But now we are all again united in Kanater and
our fellowship is really growing spiritually. We witness healings and the Lord’s
presence often – in November of 2004, I suffered a stroke that paralyzed my left
side, but after much prayer the Lord healed me miraculously, and I have many plans
to serve the Lord in the ministry after my release from prison in 2006.”
